A TALENTED young boxer has secured a national title after winning at this year’s England Boxing National Junior Championships.

Jim Smith took the title in the Male Junior Cadet 52kg category at the finals in Rotherham.

Now the 14-year-old, from Darlington, has been given the chance to train in Birmingham this weekend in the hope of securing a place in the European Championships.

The teenager gets up at 5am six days a week to train at the Phil Thomas School of Boxing, based in Middlesbrough, in an attempt to get to the top.

His proud father, Jim, said: “He has done so well to get where he is. It looks like he could have a very promising future in the game.

“He gets up every day to train and I certainly think he has the potential to go all the way.

“Hopefully, his talent will get him selected for the European Championships taking place later this year.”

The youngster has already won two Golden Gloves titles.
