Richmond Motor Club, Richardson Trophy Trial, Skeeby, Saturday

DESPITE the heavy rain during the preceding days up to the annual Richardson Trial at Skeeby on Saturday the meadow adjoining the river accommodated fifty four competitors and their vehicles on Saturday. The Richmond officials headed by Youth Secretary Sandra Fowler set a full ten section four lap trial which included twelve classes and age groups. Variation in section lines with coloured flags provided a trial for all skills and ages. Significantly a total of fourteen Class D youngsters arrived as well as a further twenty six youth contenders in other classes. Not only were the youths in action on two wheels. Miss Chloe Fowler, aged just eight, was on observing duties at one of the sections one. Chloe also observed the Wetherby trial a fortnight ago. The Richmond attitude is ‘age is no barrier.’ Interesting also was only second ride, as a trials rider, of Bolton Abbey enduro racer Sam Winterburn who happens to be a gamekeeper on the Ilkley Grand National Trial course. Not did Sam compete in his first trial but he won the main course class from Leyburn’s Darren Fowler. In terms of domination young Bailey Huntbach set the standard on the small wheels course. The boy rode two nine section laps without penalty and incurred one mark in section seven on lap three leaving Oliver Wass and Jamie Graeme to claim the lower rostrum places. In Class B Youth the result was tight with Jack Dent one penalty ahead of Martyn Pratt and Ripon’s Harry Mugridge

Darlington Motor Club, Trial, Brokes, Richmond, Sunday

THE Darlington club headed for Jason Brown’s land off the Leyburn road on Sunday to stage a charity trial in aid of Cancer Research and the event was a total success. Sixty seven competitors entered the trial riding the Colin Ayre prepared twenty one section course which was mild rather than difficult. With ten classes covering all age groups plus some older riders on twin shock machines the section were laid out with those facts in mind. Two streams and some woodland provided the back drop for the event. Low Row motor cycle dealer Andrew Brown swelled the awards coffers with clothing, a Michelin tyre and a splendid A.G. Brown riding jacket which he modelled on his way to winning the Twin Shock machine class. The Darlington club also raised £700 that will be donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. On the expert route Mark Wills claimed the honours just one penalty ahead of top Youth rider Ryan Brown. The latter had class rival Robert Weatherill who also was just one mark behind Ryan in the final count. Gary Pears had three rivals on single figure scores but hung in to win the Green course class. Youths Harry Mugridge and Callum Fowler topped their classes while Skeeby’s Leslie Richardson won the Clubman class. A fine trial and everyone a winner. Darlington will run again on October 20th.
