Thirsk RUFC kicked off the new season as they finished last season, with a convincing home win against Bramley Phoenix in Yorkshire division 4.

Thirsk started well and opened the scoring early in the game with team captain Alex Shepherd kicking a penalty from close range to go 3-0 up, within 10 minutes Bramley had levelled the score at 3-3 with a penalty of their own ,Thirsk then stretched their lead with a well work try finished by centre Callum Scott-Conder, the conversion was missed so the score was still close at 8-3 and stayed that way until after half time, although the home team looked well in control of the game getting the early upper hand of both line out and scrum set piece.

Thirsk struck again shortly after the break with another penalty kick from Shepherd, punishing Bramley for poor discipline at the breakdown 11-3 . Bramley weren't laying down and after a strong 10 minutes they worked their way into Thirsk's 22 metres and despite some resolute defence by the home side the visitors eventually found space out wind and went over for a try in the corner, the conversion was missed but still put them within a try of taking the lead.

Thirsk replied quickly and with new purpose as their forward pack pushed Bramley back deep into their own half immediately from the restart , battering the Bramley forwards backwards towards the try line Thirsk took control with pick and go rugby culminating in Prop George Wissen driving over from short range for Thirsk's second try, but the conversation was missed leaving the score at 16-8.

Thirsk's forwards started to go through the gear's allowing their back line to get some quality ball which stretched Bramley's defence resulting in them giving away another penalty to Thirsk in front of the post's which was kicked easily by Shepherd, now with breathing space between the team's at 19-8 Thirsk started to play some of the best of their rugby mixing forward grunt with smooth running lines from the backs, but it was the now Dominant Thirsk forwards who had the last word and after being awarded a scrum 15 metres out they drove the visitors scrum back over their own try line allowing flanker Angus Ramsay to dot the ball down for a further 5 points, Shepherd added the extras to leave the final score Thirsk 26- Bramley Phoenix 8.
