HOWARD Johnson was left dreaming of future glories with Quwetwo after the gelding initiated a near 115-1 treble for the trainer at Doncaster.

The son of Karinga Bay had won a bumper at Newcastle for Sue Smith when last seen in racecourse action, but has since been bought privately by Graham Wylie.

The giant six-year-old was sent off a 9-2 chance for the first division of the skybet.com Novices’ Hurdle, and having travelled strongly throughout under stable jockey Denis O’Regan, he powered clear in the straight to score by 13 lengths from Bajan Parkes.

In a week which has seen Johnson retire his three-time World Hurdle hero Inglis Drever due to injury, the Crook handler is already on the lookout for a replacement and he thinks this gelding could be pretty special.

Johnson said: ‘‘I really can’t believe how agile he is for such a big horse. When he arrived I had a job finding a box big enough for him so I thought about putting him in with the cattle!

‘‘He’s a monster really but he’s a very good monster and he has a lot of gears.

‘‘He’s actually been coughing a bit lately but he was OK yesterday and last night so we let him take his chance. He will improve a good bit, mind.

‘‘It’s not very often I get excited but I am about this horse. He could be one of those horses who might replace the Drever in time.’’ Quwetwo was introduced into the betting for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle with a number of firms. Sky Bet are offering 20-1, while bet365 and Blue Square are as short as 16s.

Johnson and O’Regan were again on target in the second division as Fushe Jo gained a deserved first success over obstacles.

The 9-1 chance cruised into contention early in the straight and quickened well once asked to go about his business to score by three lengths from favourite Limbo King.

‘‘He’s got a lot of gears and has a great cruising speed.

But he only just about gets two miles,’’ said Johnson, who has a share in the horse along with Alan Shearer.

‘‘Robert Winston thought he was very smart when he won on the Flat at Ayr as a youngster but he had a bit of a problem with his leg.

‘‘He is a half-brother to Arcalis, who seems to be improving and he jumps quickly so we’re delighted.’’ The hat-trick was completed as Silk Drum (11-10 favourite) made it three from four over timber in the St Leger Tickets On Sale 2nd February Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle, leaving Johnson eyeing a trip to the Cheltenham Festival.

‘‘He jumps like a cat and is a grand little horse,’’ Johnson continued.

‘‘I would say he’ll be good enough to go down south with so we’ll be having a look at the Fred Winter with him. He goes on any ground.’’ Just Smudge looked to be more than a few pounds ahead of the handicapper when running away with the Stratstone Lad Rover Doncaster Novices’ Handicap Chase.

Venetia Williams’ inmate was sent off the 7-4 marketleader, having bolted up at Ludlow last week, and a 7lb penalty was not enough to stop him following by seven lengths in the hands of Sam Thomas.

Williams said: ‘‘He only came to us this season and he seems to be progressing well.

‘‘The ground doesn’t make too much difference to him and he has done it well again.’’ Well Disguised (8-1) secured her second successive victory in the crownhotel.bawtry.com Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle under Garry Whillans.

‘‘She did it really well at Newcastle in soft ground last time and it is pretty soft our there again,’’ said Whillans.

Almaydan (25-1) put up a fine weight-carrying performance when lugging 11st 12lb to victory in the Bet And Watch At skybet.com Handicap Chase under Robert Thornton.
