IT was great to get the 1000 up at Doncaster last Sunday, but just as good to kick on from that straight away with a double at Carlisle the next day. The challenge now is keep up the momentum, but things are picking up nicely at the busiest part of the Flat season.

My agent, Richard Hale, is keeping me busy with 10 booked rides on Saturday and hopefully there will be a couple of winners among them.

Byron’s Choice is a horse I keep giving a positive mention to because we do think a bit of him. The handicapper has put him up 2lb for his latest second at Beverley but he’s come out of the race in great form and I’d love him to get his head in front again when he runs in the H Jarvis 141st Anniversary Handicap at Redcar.

I’m back aboard Cruising for David Brown in the opening Chic Hats EBF Novice Stakes, having finished third at Wetherby on his debut. He showed a bit of toe there and he’d have a chance here. The winner of that Wetherby race came out and ran a good second at Ripon yesterday, so the form looks all right.

After Redcar, it’s cross-country to Haydock and Boundary Lane is one I’m looking forward to riding for Julie Camacho in the Introducing Racing TV EBF Fillies’ Handicap. She has had a really good year already and is just in great heart at present and I think last time we just bumped into one.

I’m also aboard Subjectivist for Mark Johnston in the Watch Racing TV Maiden Stakes. It’s always to get on board one of Mark’s and it’s a stable for whom I have a decent record over the years. On paper, he looks to have a decent chance.

It’s a busy day, but this is the time of year where you want to be busy. I had a little celebration at home after riding the 1000th winner, but we’re hoping to organise a bit of a party at some point. The problem will be fitting it in among the racing!

It was good to get down to Royal Ascot for a couple of days this week.

Mabs Cross ran an absolute blinder to finish fourth in the King’s Stand Stakes. I was on Blue Point’s heels two furlongs out and I thought ‘I’m in with a shout here’, but if anything, I felt she just travelled too well and the early pace probably wasn’t quite strong enough for her.

She didn’t lose anything in defeat and the plan at the start of the season was always to go for the Nunthorpe and the Abbaye and I can’t see that changing. All credit to the horses that finished in front of us, but I just think a real end-to-end gallop at York might be just what she wants.

Glasvegas, who I rode to finish third in the Windsor Castle Stakes, is a really nice prospect for Keith Dalgleish and his owners, who put plenty of money into the game.

He just got outpaced a little when others were travelling better, but he absolutely flew home and he’d have got there in another two or three strides.

Some good horses have run in that race. I remember finishing second on another horse of Keith’s, Stonefield Flyer, a few years ago, and just behind us was Caspar Netscher, who went on to win four Group 2s.

The decision as to where he goes next will clearly be down to Keith and the owners, but you’d have to say he is screaming out for another furlong. He could be exciting.

As I say, it was good to be down at Royal Ascot and I was pleased to see William Buick pop into the weighing room. Hopefully he’ll be back soon.

I can’t not mention Frankie Dettori, after the week he has had too. He is an absolute showman and racing needs that kind of thing. More than that though, he’s just a great jockey. Watch his ride on Stradivarius to win the Gold Cup – the moment he chose to edge left just over a furlong out was split-second precision. If he’d stayed on the rail and tried to go up the inside, the result might well not have been the same.

Finally, I’d like to wish Racing TV presenter Niall Hannity and his wife Leanne Hannity good luck in the Chesham Stakes on the final day of the Royal Ascot meeting. Niall has always had a great deal of faith in his horse, Ardenlee Star, ever since they bought it last year and I hope he runs really well for them.
