MILLWALL (4-4-2):
Archer 6; Romeo 6, HUTCHINSON 8, Cooper 7, Meredith 7; Wallace 6 (Cahill 87), Williams 7, Saville 5, Marshall 6 (Onyedinma 81); Gregory 7, Morison 6.
Subs (not used): Martin (gk), McLaughlin, Tunnicliffe, Elliott, Shackell.
SUNDERLAND (3-4-2-1):
8 STEELE: Justified his recall with an accomplished display – made a couple of good saves and caught everything that came into the box
7 Browning: Didn’t shirk a challenge and gave as good as he got as he won a number of aerial challenges and tackles
6 O’Shea: Gave his all, but was running on empty in the closing stages and found himself defending on the edge of his box as he dropped extremely deep
6 Kone: Tried to match Morison in the physical stakes, but came under a large amount of pressure in the second half
7 Matthews: Did well up the right-hand side and delivered some dangerous crosses into the box in the first half
6 Cattermole: Ran himself into the ground as he led by example, but should have been in a position where he could have cleared Hutchinson’s shot
6 Ejaria: Started brightly, but was much less of an influence in the second half – would be more effective higher up the pitch
8 Oviedo: Took his goal superbly as a training-ground routine worked to perfection, and was an influential presence at both ends of the field
5 McGeady: Did reasonably well in the first half, but barely had a kick after the interval and most of his set-pieces weren’t great
5 McManaman: Flickered into life sporadically, but wasn’t brave enough in possession and was replaced shortly after the hour mark
4 Fletcher: Wasn’t strong enough to stand up to Millwall’s centre-halves and failed to hold on to possession when Sunderland desperately needed to relieve some pressure
Subs:
5 Asoro (for McManaman, 63): Tried to provide some attacking energy, but Sunderland were firmly on the back foot when he came on to the field
Honeyman (for McGeady, 77)
(not used): Camp (gk), Jones, Williams, Robson, Maja.
Man Of The Match: SHAUN HUTCHINSON – The Millwall defender marked Fletcher out of the game, and came up with a scrambled finish just when his side needed it most.
