SPENNYMOOR TOWN appointed their first ever managing director as it looks to continue its progression up the non-league pyramid.

Tony Wilson will begin his new role on September 1 2018 and take over the management of the football club, the academy and The Moors Tavern.

Wilson, 54, has a wealth of management experience from previous senior roles at Parker Hannifin; Spennymoor-based Thorn Lighting and Black and Decker. He is also vice president of the British Compressed Air Society and a director at the Employability Trust.

As well as boasting a glittering CV, Wilson has been a key supporter of Spennymoor Town for many years and has forged a strong relationship with the club’s chief executive, Bradley Groves, as well as many of its operating officials.

It is these relationships Wilson hopes will make the transition into the new structure a smooth one. He said: “Spennymoor is a club full of great people and with great fans. Just look how many volunteered to clear snow from the pitch recently and made the mammoth journey down to Bromley in the FA Trophy.”

Meanwhile, Spennymoor’s home game with Darlington yesterday was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and no date has yet been announced for the rearranged fixture.

The league season finishes on April 28, but Jason Ainsley’s side still have ten games to play, first up being Thursday’s trip to AFC Telford United.

Spennymoor will play their final ten league games in 24 days, with the Darlington fixture likely to be on Thursday April 19 or 26.
