Shildon moved into the quarter finals of the Durham Challenge Cup when they won 1-0 at Gateshead’s International Stadium tonight.

The Railwaymen nearly took an early lead with a great strike by Adam Burnicle that Gateshead keeper James Montgomery turned away, while Gateshead went close with an effort by Matty Halliday.

Burnicle was again denied by Montgomery on 34 minutes, before Shildon took the lead just before half time when former Gateshead player Jamie Harwood broke through and fired home.

Gateshead almost levelled with a strike by JJ O’Donnell in the second half, but Shildon stayed in control after that.

Stockton Town were comfortably beaten 4-1 at home by Sunderland under 23s, and Easington are through after beating Whickham on penalties.

In the ENL Second Division, Northallerton are now four points clear at the top after beating second bottom Darlington RA 4-1.

After a goalless first half, Damon Reaks put the RA into the lead, but Northallerton hit back with efforts by Jack Proctor (2), Aaron Ramsbottom and Chris Dickinson.

Meanwhile, ENL First Division club Washington are looking for a new manager following the departure of James Clark. They are currently second bottom of the table, eight points adrift from safety.
