Deportivo La Coruna 0 Newcastle United 0 (Newcastle win 5-4 on penalties)

JOEY BARTON went from villain to hero last night when he made amends for missing a penalty in normal time to score the crucial spot kick that decided the contest against Deportivo La Coruna.

Newcastle United’s pre-season friendly victory secured the Teresa Herrera trophy after their 5-4 penalty shootout win.

When Fabricio Coloccini was upended in the penalty area by goalkeeper Manu four minutes from the final whistle Barton looked set to seal the game. But his tame effort was easily saved, forcing the contest to be decided by spot kicks.

Peter Lovenkrands, Kevin Nolan, Andy Carroll and Ryan Taylor all slotted home their efforts before Barton secured victory with a calm finish.

Coloccini wore the captain’s armband against his former club while fellow Deportivo old boy Xisco was included in Hughton’s starting line-up on the left flank.

Steven Taylor, Dan Gosling and Danny Simpson were among those who did not travel to Spain due to injury, while new signing Sol Campbell stayed at home to work on his fitness.

Chances were at a premium during an uninspiring opening 45 minutes at the Riazor Stadium.

But shortly before the break Newcastle striker Leon Best went close to breaking the deadlock but his powerful header from Carroll’s cross was well saved.

James Perch and Taylor were booked in what was at times a bad tempered affair.

Meanwhile, reports in the French media claim Newcastle have had a bid turned down for Marseilles winger Hatem Ben Arfa .

With Chris Hughton working under tight budgetary constraints an initial loan move leading to the permanent signing of the £6m-rated left midfielder is believed to be the Magpies preferred option.

But Marseilles, who are eyeing former Newcastle player Charles N’Zogbia as a potential replacement for Ben Arfa, are looking to generate funds by selling the winger who is contracted to them until 2012.

Newcastle face competition for the highly-rated 23-yearold from German side Hoffenheim.

In the meantime, Brighton boss Gus Poyet has warned Newcastle that he is losing patience in his bid to take winger Kazenga LuaLua on loan.

The 19-year-old enjoyed a hugely success spell at the Withdean towards the end of last season but Poyet insists he will look elsewhere if they can’t agree a new deal.

“He made us think he was coming last week and then he didn’t. It’s not in our hands.

We are looking to buy someone now,” said Poyet.

“Everything has got a limit.

You cannot wait forever. “We know the boy wants to come.

Newcastle cannot make a decision.

We are not going to wait.”
