ENGLAND Test captain Joe Root was dismissed for a golden duck on his first Specsavers County Championship appearance of the season for Yorkshire.

The right-hander edged his first ball from Essex paceman Sam Cook to former England skipper Alastair Cook at first slip.

Having won the toss and elected to bat against the champions at Chelmsford, Yorkshire also lost Harry Brook, Adam Lyth and Cheteshwar Pujara to slip to 11 for four.

Root's England team-mate Jonny Bairstow is at the crease alongside Gary Ballance.

Bairstow did not last long either.

The wicketkeeper-batsman was bowled by Sam Cook for seven, leaving Yorkshire in a mess at 22 for five.

Yorkshire were folding fast as they slipped to 45 for nine.

Australia seamer Peter Siddle snared three scalps while Sam Cook completed his five-wicket haul.

Mark Stoneman's hopes of nailing down his England Test spot suffered another blow as he was run out after making yet another start.

The Surrey opener battled hard to get to 28 against Worcestershire before falling victim to Ed Barnard's direct hit.

Stoneman has made 85 runs in five innings so far this season.
