As England try and win the Champions Trophy this month, Eoin Morgan is attempting to copy Paul Collingwood in becoming the only English cricket captain to lift a global trophy.

In 2010, Collingwood led his country to the World Twenty 20, hitting the winning runs against Australia in the final.

Morgan’s England are bookies’ favourites to win the ICC Champions Trophy on home turf this month.

They started with a win over Bangladesh on Thursday, and, while tougher tests will follow, Collingwood feels success can be achieved by this new, all powerful England side.

“We’ve all been watching over the last few years and witnessed the change in outlook,’’ he mused. “The cricket played has been exciting – winning or losing.

“The team is now full of match-winners and previously we have gone into tournaments with three or four matchwinners in the actual team, safe to say there’s eight, nine, ten guys now capable of winning games for England.

“It’s a great position to be in, a team on top of their game and confidence will be high. If it doesn’t work our then they will still entertain and do their best – they have a chance to do something special’’

He added: “There’s been a real change in outlook, that’s the way the dressing room has gone with the players they have – Ben Stokes is one driving it forward and how much it’s turned around from the World Cup of two years ago shows the change in mentality.

“They are on the other side of the line, being aggressive and it’s great to watch, it’s exciting for the future. A lot of these players involved are still very young and will be around for a few years to come.’’

Collingwood is embarking on his testimonial year at Durham. As well as the T20 game on August 20, he’s also got a number of other events lined up. There’s two golf days – one of Close House, one at Loch Lomond.

He said: “We’ve got a few events lined up – check the website Colly40.com – it’s hard putting it together, I’m so thankful for all the effort people put in to organise them all. It’s hard going.

“We’ve got two golf days, one at Close House on October 4, Pullman Group has organised that and they are very good friends of mine. That’s days after the British Masters, so as soon as I knew that date was a possible I went for it. The course will be in great nick, the stands will be up, the greens will be sharp and we will experience everything the pros experience.

“And we’ve another at a course very close to my heart, Loch Lomond days before the T20.

“I’m playing kind of off four, somedays hot, somedays very cold.’’

Tickets for the T20 are available in advance at £10 and on the day £15. Children tickets are £5. Hospitality packages are available, which includes a bbq and after-match party with the players at £50 and £75.
