MICHAEL Richardson shrugged off the run-out of opening partner Cameron Steel to make a season's best 64 out of 133 for three at tea.

Opening for the first time in the championship, he put on 52 with Steel and 67 with Jack Burnham, who got carried away and surrendered to Imran Tahir for 35.

Steel was furious after playing Tahir's first ball to square leg and being sent back after Richardson initially appeared to call him for a run.

Burnham hit the next ball through mid-wicket for four and on 14 he drove the leg-spinner over extra cover for six in an over which cost 15.

It became an all-spin attack when 16-year-old Afghanistan-born off-spinner Hamidullah Qadri was introduced and he bowled more tightly than Tahir.

But Burnham's anxiety to get after the leg-spinner proved his undoing when he stayed back tried to whip a ball from outisde off stump to leg, only to play on.

Richardson, whose 50 came off 88 balls, also played on when trying a dig out a quicker ball of yorker length from Qadri.

Graham Clark was on three at tea with Paul Collingwood on four.
