Yorkshire v Lancashire (County Championship) : Day Two

Yorkshire were in control of the Old Trafford Roses match at lunchtime yesterday but then lost their grip as Mal Loye and Luke Sutton both plundered centuries for Lancashire, who closed the second day on 359 for six with a first-innings lead of 14.

It may have been a different story if Michael Lumb had reacted more swiftly to an edge over his head at first slip from Loye when the batsman was 77 because his dismissal then would have left Lancashire on 190 for five

But Loye went on to complete his second consecutive Roses century - and his fifth in the Championship this season - before he bungled a sweep at Darren Lehmann and this time Lumb made amends with a catch at leg gully.

Loye's century came off 161 balls with eight boundaries and by the time he was out he had added 118 with Sutton, Lancashire were 249 for five and the balance had shifted in their favour.

Yorkshire resumed on 344 for nine in the morning and Glen Chapple wrapped things up with his fourth delivery which flattened debutant paceman James Lee's off-stump, leaving Deon Kruis unbeaten on 21 from just 21 balls.

Kruis, with a strong wind at his back, bowled an impressive new-ball spell and, after taking 22 deliveries to get off the mark, Lancashire captain Mark Chilton edged an away swinger from the South African to wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy.

Lancashire lost their other opener, Iain Sutcliffe, in the next over when he slapped Steve Patterson straight to Craig White at cover. Patterson, coming on as first change, showed admirable control bowling into the wind and he could feel well pleased with figures of 8-3-14-1.

Lee almost celebrated his debut with a wicket with his first ball which struck Stuart Law firmly on the pad but umpire Ian Gould rejected a confident appeal for lbw.

Kruis returned for a second spell and Law edged a slash to Brophy to make Lancashire 77 for three, Yorkshire gaining a further success at 131 when New Zealander Nathan Astle, having played himself in, aimed to leg and was pinned lbw by Gillespie.

Lancashire's confidence grew as Loye and Sutton built their stand before Loye departed upon completing his century.

Sutton, back from injury, hooked Gillespie for four to register his first century for Lancashire off 178 deliveries with nine boundaries and he was still going strong at the close with 109, having put on an unbroken 54 with Kyle Hogg, 26.
