A half-century from Harvey Hosein helped Derbyshire recover after Durham’s bowlers dominated on the opening day of the Division Two match at Derby.
The 22-year-old wicketkeeper came in with his side reeling at 36 for 4 but at tea he was unbeaten on 69 out of 177 for 7.
Derbyshire’s decision to bat first backfired as Chris Rushworth and Ben Raine both struck twice before James Weighell removed Alex Hughes to reduce the home side to 68 for 5 at lunch.
But Hosein played well in challenging conditions to reach 50 from 106 balls and shared a stand of 56 with Matt Critchley who made 24 before falling to Gareth Harte.
Hosein added another 50 with Anuj Dal who edged behind to give Weighell his second wicket.
