DURHAM emulated visitors Sussex by failing to build on a big second wicket stand as they slipped from 168 for one to 248 for five at tea, trailing by 98.
On the ground where he made his debut century two years ago, Ollie Robinson revived the visitors by removing Tom Latham and Cameron Steel after they had put on 163.
They were coasting in early afternoon, but both departed in similar fashion off miscued pulls. Steel fell for 73 when he found George Garton at deep mid-wicket and four overs later Latham skied to Laurie Evans at deep backward square to depart for 77.
Paul Collingwood got off the mark by driving Garton wide of mid-on for four, but two balls later the left-armer skidded one through to pin him bang in front.
Replays suggested Michael Richardson was justified in looking nonplussed when adjudged caught behind off a ball from Chris Jordan which left him sharply off the pitch.
Graham Clark, pulling strongly, was on 37 at tea with Ryan Pringle on seven.
