As days go, yesterday wasn’t a great one for Yorkshire.

They were beaten by seven wickets with 24.3 overs to spare in their Royal London one-day Cup opener against Worcestershire at Headingley having been bowled out for just 170.

It was their fourth successive limited overs defeat of the season.

Then, it was revealed that their injury and availability problems are mounting up.

Jack Brooks is set to be out for up to a month with a quad tear suffered during last week’s Roses Championship win, and fellow seamer Matthew Fisher has suffered a second recurrence of the hamstring injury he initially suffered in March.

The 18-year-old encountered the problem playing as a batsman for the Yorkshire Academy at the weekend.

It means that Brooks and Fisher have joined Ryan Sidebottom (fractured fibula) in being approximately a month away from returns.

And it gets worse for Yorkshire.

England’s squad for the forthcoming one-day series against Sri Lanka, starting June 21, should be announced next week, when David Willey, Adil Rashid and Liam Plunkett could all be involved.

If so, it would leave them with only Tim Bresnan, Steve Patterson, Will Rhodes and Karl Carver as bowlers who have played Championship matches.

Yorkshire’s next Championship fixture is at Durham on June 20.

It is not completely out of the question that they could dip into the loan market to supplement the inexperienced seam options of Ben Coad, James Wainman and Jared Warner.

"We have got numbers, but not experience,” said Yorkshire’s director of professional cricket Martyn Moxon. “We'll have to crack on.

"At the minute, we're ok. But the game we have to assess whether we're ok for is Durham. We'll have to assess the situation at some point early next week.

"If Plunkett is picked for the ODI squad, that would be a challenge. If not, we have three senior guys and then we'll see who we slide in for Dave Willey.”

On the field yesterday, Yorkshire were undone by a timid batting display in their RL50 opener against a Worcestershire side who also beat them in the T20 Blast last Thursday.

Pace off the ball worked a treat for the Rapids on a slow surface, with only Gary Ballance reaching 30.

Seven of Yorkshire’s batsmen reached double figures and failed to go on, including Willey batting at eight on his List A debut for the county.

Young spinners George Rhodes and Brett D’Oliveira took two wickets apiece for the visitors, as did new ball seamers Jack Shantry and Joe Leach.

Worcester bowled straight and forced the mistakes.

It was a surprise to see Willey come in at eight, even more so when Leach was promoted to open as a pinch-hitter for Worcester and top-scored with 63 off 35 balls.

He shared 107 inside 13 overs with Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who returned a run-a-ball 42.

Moxon added: "In Twenty20, Willey will open straightaway. In one-day cricket, we want to get Lyth and Lees playing like they did in the last two years when we've got to the quarter-final and semi-final.

“We know what they can do at the top of the order when they're playing like they can.

“We can be flexible with David in the middle order. If it's going really well, we can get him in earlier.”
