AFTER watching his side smash nine goals in two games away from home, Danny Wilson couldn't be happier with his strikers.

In-form Jon Daly has scored four of the nine and Joel Porter rounded off Tuesday's win at Grimsby with a 20-yard effort.

The pair have linked up to great effect in the last week, with Daly in the form of his life.

Pools have never scored as many goals in back-to-back games away from home, although in 1990 they scored five at Aldershot and four at Maidstone, when they had a home game sandwiched in between.

After creating a slice of club history with their comprehensive 4-1 win at Blundell Park, Wilson said: "Jon has put two fantastic penalties away and his confidence is sky high right now. Who would have thought three, four, five, six weeks ago he would be in the position he is now with the goals he has - he's been terrific.

"Jon chases lost causes and that's the sign of a good striker. The cross wasn't the best - but Matty Robson will now argue otherwise - but it was down to Jon's persistence.

"The link play was fantastic; Joel and Jon had the central defenders all over the place.

"They got in behind them and that was supplemented by the two wide players. The way we played I don't think anyone could complain about that scoreline.

"Joel's goal was fantastic - he bent the ball into the top corner with his wrong foot. It was a terrific finish and he's deserved it. That, for me, was his best game since I've been here.

"He's playing to the standards we expect and, by doing that, he's got his rewards again.

"His link play was excellent, he was the first line of defence when they had possession and the strikers took their chances - you can't ask for any more than that.''

Once again, Gary Liddle came in for praise. The former Middlesbrough man bagged his third goal in two games with a 25-yard free-kick and Wilson said: "What a free-kick that was. I know a lot of managers say it, but if that was in the Premiership, it would be shown time and time again.

"The pace, the height, the bend, the shape - the free-kick had it all.''

Pools will be without Antony Sweeney for up to a month after he damaged medial ligaments on Tuesday.

* Former Pools manager Mike Newell has distanced himself from reports linking him with the manager's job at West Brom.

The Luton manager was one of the names linked with the post at The Hawthorns following Bryan Robson's departure and was rumoured to have been given an interview.

But the 41-year-old insisted: ''There has been no contact with West Brom. I have signed a four-year contract at Luton.
