Jamie Chandler has been named as Darlington’s young player of the year, and says he already wants next season to start.

Quakers’ campaign ended a fortnight ago when they won the FA Trophy at Wembley against Mansfield Town, a game that saw Chandler named man of the match.

The accolades have continued for the former Sunderland youngster who has received the club’s young player honour in his first full season at The Northern Echo Arena.

But his thoughts are already on next season, and said: “I’ve been watching all the games on TV in the last couple of weeks and while the break is nice, I’m missing it already!

“I’m missing the day-to-day banter and the games, but I’m sure it will all come back round quick enough.

“I’m going to the gym and for runs to keep myself ticking over.”

Chandler took the young player prize after beating Dan Burn into second place, and he added: “I’m absolutely delighted to win this award at the end of what’s been a fantastic season for us in the end.

“To get an award from your team-mates, the lads who you work with day in, day out, is really special and feels like an achievement.”

Meanwhile, former Darlington winger Chris Moore is to go on trial at Gateshead.

He was released last week by Quakers, despite playing in the win at Wembley, and the Heed have offered him a two-week trial during July.

Boss Ian Bogie said: “Moore will feature in the friendlies against Huddersfield, Harrogate and Carlisle and it is a chance to show what he can do.

“He came through the ranks at Newcastle United and is a player with good pace so we will see how it goes.”

One player who has already agreed to join Gateshead is ex-Darlington midfielder Micky Cummins.

The 33-year-old has signed a one-year contract at the International Stadium having been released by Grimsby Town where he spent last season after two years with Rotherham who he joined after leaving Quakers in 2008.

Bogie said: “He is just what we need; a talented player with a physical presence who can also score goals.

“He is renowned for scoring goals from midfield during his career, has a lot of know how and will put his foot in and dictate play.”
