CHRIS Turner has laid down the gauntlet to Ritchie Jones – asking the midfielder to reproduce Saturday’s impressive form on a regular basis.

Jones was introduced as a second-half substitute against Leeds and his performance lifted Pools, as they secured a useful point in a 2- 2 draw.

Having been restricted to substitute outings since the 5-0 humbling by MK Dons, he has started in just over half of Pools games this season.

Now, however, after his most impressive outing of the season, Turner wants more.

“Ritchie Jones did fantastically well, but we need that from the start,’’ he said. “He's had an impact in the last 20 minutes or so lately and he played 30 minutes and did well – now we need that from 3 o'clock onwards next time he plays.

“That's the standard and that's the tempo we want from him, he's got it, but we want it week in, week out from the start and something he's got to attain to.’’ Pools have to wait two weeks until their next game, with the weekend trip to Southampton postponed with the Saints involved in the FA Cup.

And Turner, with Huddersfield next up on February 20, admitted: “It's a bad thing we have a few weeks off, I wish we were at Southampton next week. But we will take stock and we may have James Brown available for the next games, but I would rather be playing next week.

“It was important to play well at home, people don't believe how well we have played away from home.

“Last week Paul Lambert said we were the best team to go to Norwich and after the game he asked who we had up next. Leeds – he said that would be a tough one for them. Not us, them.

“People see Hartlepool as a good team and it was important we put on a performance for people.

“We aren't too far away and it's about this season building a platform to move on from.

“I can see the makings of a good side starting to develop again.

“A performance like that may trigger something in the players to make them go on and make their mark.

“Their luck may have changed by scoring late on, instead of it happening to us.

We have the makings of a good side and we need to take it on.’’
