LAURA Robson will be the first British player in action at Wimbledon today as she takes on Daniela Hantuchova at the All England Club.

With Andy Murray not playing until tomorrow, the spotlight will be firmly on reigning junior Wimbledon champion Robson on Court Two.

The 15-year-old has been handed a wild card into the main draw and faces a tough task against Hantuchova, the world number 33.

Hantuchova reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2002 and the fourth round in 2006 and 2007.

She was ranked as high as fifth in the world in 2003.

Other British players in action include James Ward against seventh seed Fernando Verdasco on Court One, Josh Goodall against France’s Michael Llodra and Georgie Stoop taking on seventh seed Vera Zvonareva.

In the absence of defending champion Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer opens proceedings on Centre Court against Yen-Hsun Lu, with Serena Williams then facing Neuza Silva of Portugal and Novak Djokovic up against Julien Benneteau.

On Court One, former champion Maria Sharapova takes on Ukraine’s Viktoriya Kutuzova, French Open finalist Robin Soderling faces Gilles Muller and Verdasco plays Ward.

In keeping with tradition, the defending women’s champion, Venus Williams, will begin the defence of her title tomorrow.
