OFFICIALS from Newcastle United, AFC Wimbledon and the EFL were locked in talks on Monday in a bid to come to a swift agreement on rearranging the postponed Carabao Cup third round tie.

The clash was scheduled to take place on Tuesday night but was postponed after dramatic pictures emerged of a sinkhole on the Plough Lane pitch, caused by flooding in the local area.

Walkways were also flooded, with the League Two club confirming the stadium "is closed until further notice".

At this stage, it's not clear when the pitch at Plough Lane will be deemed playable again, with AFC Wimbledon scheduled to host Accrington Stanley in League Two this coming Saturday and Crewe next Tuesday.

It's understood Crewe officials have also been involved in discussions on Monday amid the possibility of next week's League Two clash being rescheduled and replaced by the cup tie against Newcastle. That's just one option being discussed.

An international break follows Newcastle's Premier League trip to Everton a week on Saturday and the Carabao Cup fourth round ties are then scheduled to take place in the last week of October.

With the damage to Wimbledon's pitch still being assessed, it's not clear at this stage whether any upcoming fixtures will be able to take place at Plough Lane. If possible, Wimbledon will still host the third round tie against the Magpies but it's understood that the prospect of the game taking place at a neutral venue or being moved to St James' Park hasn't been ruled out.

The EFL hope an agreement can be reached as soon as possible, with fans of both clubs awaiting confirmation of what happens next after Monday's short-notice postponement.

Eddie Howe's press conference, which was scheduled to take place at 9am on Monday, was cancelled ahead of official confirmation of the postponement.

An AFC Wimbledon statement said:  "We regret to inform supporters that due to extensive overnight flooding of the River Wandle and surrounding areas, including at our Cherry Red Records Stadium, Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup third-round fixture against Newcastle United has been postponed.

"More information will follow in due course regarding fixture rearrangement. The stadium is closed until further notice."

Newcastle said in a statement: "Further details, including information for ticket holders, will be announced in due course."
