NEWCASTLE UNITED are adamant Sven Botman will not be leaving for Paris St Germain this summer – even if the French club step up their interest in the centre-half when the transfer window reopens.

Paris St Germain are set for yet another major overhaul this summer, with the hierarchy in the French capital determined to make changes after their latest Champions League campaign ended in disappointment on Wednesday evening when they were knocked out by Bayern Munich in the round of 16.

It has been strongly suggested that there will be an attempt to move away from the previous policy of hoovering up ‘Galacticos’ to a more patient attempt at squad building, with Botman understood to have been identified as a potential defensive target.

Paris St Germain looked at the centre-half before he left Ligue 1 side Lille to join Newcastle in the summer, but opted not to make a formal offer.

Botman has subsequently slipped seamlessly into life in the Premier League, establishing himself as one of Eddie Howe’s first-choice centre-halves and producing a series of impressive defensive displays that have helped thrust the Magpies into the battle for a Champions League place.

The 23-year-old signed a long-term contract to the summer of 2027 when he joined Newcastle last July, and is regarded by Howe as a key component of the club’s ambitious future plans.

Along with the rest of Newcastle’s recruitment team, Howe is anticipating external interest in Botman this summer. However, there is a shared determination to ensure the Dutchman will not be leaving Tyneside after just one season in a black-and-white shirt.

Newcastle’s Saudi Arabia-based ownership group have provided assurances that there will be no need to sell players no matter where the Magpies finish this season, with Amanda Staveley adamant that the Magpies will not be viewed as a ‘selling club’ as they look to establish themselves amongst the European elite.

Newcastle have initiated a round of contract talks with Bruno Guimaraes’ representatives in an attempt to tie the Brazilian to a new long-term deal, and while there are unlikely to be fresh talks over Botman given that he only signed his initial contract eight months ago, there will be an equally firm stance if bids are tabled for the defender.

There will be exits from St James’ Park this summer, with Howe keen to continue the process of restructuring his squad that was evident in January.

Karl Darlow and Ciaran Clark will both complete permanent departures from Tyneside after joining Championship sides on loan earlier this season, while Ryan Fraser will also be leaving this summer after he was frozen out of the first-team group.

“Ryan is training with the Under-21s,” confirmed Howe last week. “I made the decision to concentrate on the players that are committed to Newcastle."

It remains to be seen what Howe decides to do with Allan Saint-Maximin if he receives a formal approach for the French winger.

Having been one of Newcastle’s key performers for most of his three-and-a-half years in the North-East, Saint-Maximin has found himself becoming an increasingly peripheral figure this season. He has only completed the full 90 minutes of a game on two occasions this term, and was axed from the starting line-up to accommodate January signing Anthony Gordon in last weekend’s defeat at Manchester City.

Saint-Maximin has been linked with a possible return to his native France in the last couple of months, and it will be interesting to see if Howe decides to cash in on the 25-year-old this summer in order to create more space for spending of his own within the parameters of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.

Loris Karius, Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie are all due to become free agents at the end of the current campaign, and at this stage, there does not appear to be much likelihood of any of the trio being offered a new deal.
