SUNDERLAND’S teenage winger Jewison Bennette capped off his fine week by scoring a brace for Costa Rica in their 2-2 friendly draw with South Korea.

Last Saturday, the 19-year-old came off the bench to score a late equaliser to earn a 2-2 draw with Watford before jetting off for the international break.

Bennette was named in the starting line-up by Luis Fernando Suarez for this afternoon’s game in Asia.

South Korea took the lead through Wolves striker Hwang Hee-Chan but Bennette scored the equalising goal just before half-time latching onto a cross at the back post. His first international goal for Los Ticos.

Costa Rica found themselves in front just after the hour mark when a counter attack saw Kim Seung-Gyu save Anthony Contreras’ header before Bennette finished on the follow up from close range.

However, Bennette’s goals weren’t enough to hold onto a comeback win. Goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado was sent off in the 80th minute and South Korea took advantage of having the extra man as Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung Min found the equalising goal five minutes later.

The teenager is hoping to narrow in on a spot in Costa Rica’s World Cup squad for the winter tournament in Qatar as well as earn a place in the Sunderland side.

Bennette and the Costa Rica squad will remain in South Korea where they will take on Uzbekistan in another friendly match on Tuesday. He will then return to Wearside for the resumption of the Championship campaign as the Black Cats host Preston North End at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Sunderland captain Corry Evans is in the Northern Ireland squad and will be hoping to feature when they host Kosovo in their latest Nations League tie. Black Cats full-back Trai Hume is currently in the Under-21's squad.
