Gary Pearson was Hetton Lyons' hero with a penalty just seven minutes from time that won his side the FA Sunday Cup after a dramatic final at Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

They twice fell behind at Anfield to holders Coundon, first to a goal in only the second minute, and also lost striker Adam Johnston to injury very early on.

But the Wear Valley Sunday League side recovered to reclaim the trophy they also won in 2006.

Coundon knocked Hetton out of the competition last year and their hopes of retaining the silverware received a huge boost when Andrew Thompson scored after only 77 seconds.

He found the net with a 22-yard free-kick that Hetton's former Darlington keeper Keith Finch got a hand to but could only push the low shot into the net.

Hetton suffered another blow when Johnston limped off in only the third minute following Mark Foster's challenge.

It was an explosive start in a game that was all-square when Jamie Clarke, Johnston's replacement, headed in a Stuart Irvine cross on 18 minutes.

But just three minutes later Coundon went ahead again with a fine individual effort from Martin Houlahan.

Irvine, once of Hartlepool United, levelled with an impressive strike from an angle nine minutes after the restart from which point Hetton grew stronger, creating numerous chances and probably deserved to win though Pearson's penalty came in controversial circumstances.

Stuart Owen harshly adjudged to have handled, giving Pearson, one of seven ex-Darlington players involved in the final, the chance to become the match-winner in front of the Kop.

Coundon sent on two subs, including striker Lee Ellison who surprisingly had not started, but it was to no avail as Hetton exacted revenge against the side that dumped them out of the competition last season.
