EDDIE HOWE has revealed that Callum Wilson was withdrawn during Newcastle United’s 3-3 draw with Manchester City because of concerns over the state of his hamstrings.

Wilson scored Newcastle’s second goal as they claimed a point against the champions, and will have impressed England boss Gareth Southgate, who in the stands at St James’ Park.

However, he was withdrawn in the 69th minute, making way for Chris Wood, with Howe concerned that the striker’s long-standing hamstring issues were about to reappear.

Howe said: “Callum was feeling his hamstring at half-time. It was just a tightness, nothing more than that, but we were aware watching him in the second half that he wasn’t fully opening up.

“We felt at that moment the team probably needed someone who could fully sprint, and we just wanted to protect him from serious injury.”

Dan Burn suffered concussion in the closing stages of the game after being struck in the face by the ball, and is not expected to be available for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup game at Tranmere Rovers.
