ALEX NEIL has refused to comment on suggestions that Sunderland are on the brink of signing Costa Rica international Jewison Bennett.

Reports in Central America suggest the Black Cats have been discussing a deal for 18-year-old Bennett, a winger who has claimed two goals and one assist in his four appearances in the Costa Rican top-flight so far this season.

The youngster would almost certainly be signed with an initial view to slotting into Sunderland’s development squad, although the fact he has been fast-tracked into Costa Rica’s senior international set-up means he could be capable of making a mark in the Black Cats’ first team.

Bennett has made six senior appearances for his country, and became the youngest player to win a senior cap for Costa Rica when he made his debut at the age of just 17.

Bennett’s current club, Club Sport Herediano, are reportedly ready to cash in, with Central American reports suggesting the teenager could be due for a medical on Wearside before the weekend.

However, when he was asked about the reported interest at his press conference this morning, Neil was remaining non-committal.

The Black Cats boss said: “I can’t tell you anything. You’ve just told me his name, maybe you know more than me. I’m not trying to be awkward, but what do you want me to say about it? There’s nothing to say until something happens – or if something happens.”
