SUNDERLAND exited the Carabao Cup at the first round stage after a first round defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

A wonderstriker from Dennis Adeniran and a calm finish Sylla Sow sealed the victory at Hillsborough as the Black Cats 18 match unbeaten run came to an end.

SUNDERLAND XI (3-5-2)

5 Bass – Not a lot he could do for the first goal but gave the ball away for the second. Not a convincing night.

5 Winchester – Normally looks more composed in a back three but to find the right passes and looked weak at the back.

6 Wright – Looked composed at times and battled with Gregory and Paterson well.

6 Alese – Made a few sloppy passes in the first half but improved as the game wore on at Hillsborough.

7 Hume – He was lively and energetic down the right hand side. His cross in the second half should have been converted. Looks raw but plenty of potential.

6 Sohna – Played on the left hand side at wing-back and was out of position but didn’t provide much of a threat going forward.

6 O’Nien – Battled well in the heart of midfield but got overran in the first half.

6 Matete – Made a few sloppy passes at times but fed a neat ball through to Diamond who saw his snapshot whistle wide.

6 Embleton – Struggled to have much influence on the game and couldn’t find the pockets of space he loves to get into.

6 Roberts – Tried to make things happen with a number of weaving runs but didn’t have much of an impact in attack.

7 Diamond – One of the few players who provided the Sheffield Wednesday defence with something to think about. Unlucky not to score with a shot in the box.
