SUNDERLAND have lost the battle to re-sign Nathan Broadhead as the Everton striker completes a season long loan move to Championship rivals Wigan Athletic.

The 24-year-old, who scored 13 goals in 27 appearances for the Black Cats last season, will run the course of his deal on Merseyside by spending the forthcoming campaign at the DW Stadium. However, reports suggest he has been offered a new contract with Frank Lampard’s side.

With the addition of Ellis Simms, who scored two goals in his first start for Sunderland at the weekend in their 3-2 win over Bristol City, losing the race to sign Broadhead won’t full as much of a blow to Black Cats. However, Sunderland were keen to sign him earlier in the summer after engaging in talks with Everton and manager Alex Neil wants reinforcements before the closure of the transfer window.

Upon completing the move to Greater Manchester, Broadhead said: “It’s a good environment and it (the loan move) makes sense for myself. The manager persuaded me to come here so I’m looking forward to it.

“I like to think that I’m a flair player and I’m quick. I can score headers, as well as being able to score with both feet. Hopefully I can score many goals for Wigan.

“It’s a massive challenge to prove myself in the Championship and I’m looking forward to it.”

Sunderland return to EFL Cup action tomorrow night when they make the trip to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday, who they beat in the League One play-off semi finals last season.
