SUNDERLAND are lining up a move for John Ruddy as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping department ahead of the start of next season.

The Black Cats need a new shot-stopper after Lee Burge was released as a free agent and Thorben Hoffmann returned to Bayern Munich following the end of his season-long loan spell.

Anthony Patterson remains on the club’s books, having established himself as the club’s number one in the final three months of last season, but Alex Neil is keen to sign an experienced goalkeeper to provide the 22-year-old with some stiff competition.

Ruddy is a free agent after leaving Wolves at the end of his contract, and the veteran is one of a number of options currently being assessed by Sunderland’s recruitment team.

The 35-year-old made 72 appearances during a five-year spell with Wolves, having moved to Molineux after a lengthy spell with Norwich City.

Ruddy spent seven years at Carrow Road, with his performances for the Canaries earning him a call-up to the England team in 2012.

He played under Neil during his time as a Norwich player, and the pair’s relationship is likely to prove crucial to any future discussions.

As well as looking to bring in some new additions, Sunderland officials remain involved in ongoing discussions with Bailey Wright, Lynden Gooch and Patrick Roberts, all of whom were offered new deals at the end of last season. Wright is currently on international duty with Australia as the Socceroos attempt to qualify for the World Cup.
