SUNDERLAND winger Aiden McGeady has been back in full training with the squad as he faces a race to be fit for the remaining three League One games of the season.

The 36-year-old has been out since November with a long standing knee problem. The initial diagnosis saw him ruled out for the next 2-3 months but the problem has prolonged right the way through the season.

Sunderland’s season could be extended by reaching the play-offs but McGeady is short on time to be involved with their final game of the season being played in eight days time.

Head coach Alex Neil has delivered positive updates on McGeady’s recovery in recent weeks but the boss revealed a big step forward for the club stalwart.

He explained: “He trained with us yesterday so that is a big step forward.

“He hasn’t been with the group for quite a while now but yesterday was his first training session so obviously it’s only the beginning. He was on the grass yesterday with us and he looked fine.”

McGeady is unlikely to feature in tomorrow’s game against Cambridge United at the Stadium of Light. Meanwhile, his contract at Sunderland is due to come to an end in the summer have signed a one-year extension before the start of the season.

The Black Cats other remaining games see them host Rotherham United on Tuesday evening before a trip to Morecambe next Saturday.
