EDDIE Howe is of the belief that Newcastle United’s win over Leeds United can go on to transform their season.

The Magpies beat Marcelo Bielsa’s side by a goal to nil thanks to Jonjo Shelvey’s second half free-kick at Elland Road. As a result, Newcastle climbed to 18th in the Premier League table and a point behind Norwich City.

Newcastle are without a game for just over two weeks having lost in the FA Cup against Cambridge United. They have flown out to a Saudi Arabian training camp today where they will spend the next week.

With just over seven days left of the January transfer window, Newcastle will be hopeful of making some last minute additions with the club looking to negotiate deals for Diego Carlos and Jesse Lingard.

With their win at the weekend, a training camp to come and additions hopefully made before next week’s deadline, Howe hopes they can be the catalyst to transforming their season.

Speaking about what he had learned about his players after the performance at Elland Road, Howe admitted: “You learn new things about your players whether you win lose or draw.

“There was a resilience in the team who were fighting for each other

“They are fighting for the club and they have belief that they are not dead and buried and there’s more to come.

“Where does it rank in terms of my career? It’s a difficult one, I get asked that a lot.

“I’m so pleased for everyone connected with Newcastle that we won the game. I thought it was a big match for us and hopefully it will transform us.”

Newcastle United are expected to play an exhibition match in the coming week during their Saudi Arabian training camp.
