CHRIS Wilder won his first match in charge of Boro beating Huddersfield Town 2-1 earlier this afternoon bringing the curtain down on what he’s described as a difficult week.

Boro produced a comprehensive and clinical display against the Terriers with Duncan Watmore scoring both the goals after great build up play in the first half.

Huddersfield produced a late consolation when the ball deflected of goalkeeper Luke Daniels into the back of his own net but it did little to change the outcome.

Overall, Wilder has earned four points out of a possible nine from his first three games in charge. While the first two games didn’t produce the results he was after, he admitted that the players performance merited the win in West Yorkshire.

“It's been a long week and at times quite difficult” Wilder said.

“The first two games, performance wise, deserved better but it was the correct result today. It's been difficult because you have three games quickly with a new manager coming to the football club, there's a lot to chuck at the players.

“But the way we played, especially in the first half, was good and encouraging.

“We talk about where I want us to be in terms of conditioning and matching the first half to the second half, but I thought our shape was good. We limited a team that has been playing well to virtually nothing.

“We should do better before the goal, Onel plays the ball down the side but gets caught. They counter and then it's an own-goal off the back of that.

“I thought we were pretty comfortable in and out of possession. First half good, we dominated the game. Second half, they have to come out and do something. Our shape was good, apart from the last bit.”

Wilder lamented the players second half attitude in the defeat to Preston North End on Tuesday night that led to their downfall in the 2-1 loss at the Riverside Stadium.

The stern message from the manager was that the players had to play as more a team rather than a group of individuals. He thought that message was carried out well by his team against the Terriers.

“The team has always got to be the star of the show” Wilder added.

“This is why I explained it after the game. In that way of playing, as I want it to be, players will do something that catches the eye. Just as good as Duncan Watmore's finish for the second was the ball through from Crooksy.

“Whether it's a big moment to score a goal or a big block or save, it's a big moment that players produce.

“The team was good today, and it has been. From Saturday into Tuesday and obviously today.”

Boro now have a free week to work on the training ground before their next Championship outing which is next Saturday against Swansea City at the Riverside Stadium.
