MIDDLESBROUGH couldn't complete a deal for a unnamed free agent over the international period but will consider their options elsewhere.

The club are desperate for numbers in the squad, particularly in the defensive areas with injuries to Grant Hall, Dael Fry, Marc Bola and Anfernee Dijksteel. The club have openly expressed a desire to bring in free agents until the next transfer window opens in January.

Negotiations took place with an unnamed player over the international but the bad news is that they club couldn't afford to get the deal across the line.

“We were hoping to get one or two free agents in but we weren’t able to" said Neil Warnock.

“We couldn’t quite financially agree a deal with one.

“So we have to go with what we’ve got. I can’t see it (the deal) now after this week if I’m honest.

“We just couldn’t financially get the deal done and had to leave that.

“We’re still looking at one or two, but fitness-wise is the issue. We’re in the middle of October now and these lads haven’t played. So it’s catch-22 really.

“If somebody cropped up who we thought was fit enough, we’d consider it if it fitted into our wage structure.”

While the club failed in their pursuit for a free agent during the international break, the Boro boss says they're not giving up hope in the weeks and months to come.

Warnock added: “We’re still looking at the bosman rule to see if we can tempt anyone to come and train for a week or ten days because we might need them in November or December, that’s what we are looking at.

“I won’t be rushing into filling those two places just yet."
