SUNDERLAND winger Lynden Gooch will miss Tuesday night's League One tie with Cheltenham Town but is expected to be back for the weekend.

Gooch was absent from the matchday squad for their win over Bolton Wanderers due to a foot injury. The American had featured in every league game for Sunderland this season so far.

He's been an important part of the Black Cats attack in a season that has seen Sunderland win nine of their eleven games in all competitions so far.

While the problem will keep the 25-year-old out for the next game, manager Lee Johnson doesn't expect him to be out of action for too long.

“I don’t think he’s that serious" said Johnson.

“He actually picked up a knock in training before the Fleetwood game on the top of the foot.

“It’s more than likely that has been deferred to the bottom of the foot to a ligament that’s called the Plantar Fascia and that’s the bit that’s starting to cause him a bit of a problem.

“I’d expect him to be out again for Tuesday and potentially be available for Saturday or maybe Lincoln City on the Tuesday.”

Meanwhile, defender Callum Doyle will be assessed before the game after he went off in the closing stages against Bolton with a stiff back.
