How did the players fare in Sunderland's Carabao Cup win at Wigan?
WIGAN (4-3-3):
Amos 5; Lloyd 4, Kerr 4, Tilt 5, Pearce 4; Smith 5, Cousins 4 (Lang 67, 4), Massey 4 (Adeeko 85); EDWARDS 5 (Sze 90), Humphrys 5, Jones 4.
Subs (not used): Tickle (gk), Carragher, Long, McHugh.
SUNDERLAND (4-2-3-1):
6 Burge: Claimed a speculative first-half effort from Massey, but didn’t have to make a serious save on his return to the side
8 Huggins: Set up O’Nien’s goal and was a threat on the overlap all evening – hobbled off late on with what looked like an ankle injury
7 Alves: Oozes composure despite his lack of first-team experience and was always in the right position to deal with Wigan’s attacks
8 Wright: Blocked a second-half effort from Tilt and successfully put the memory of Saturday’s stoppage-time aberration behind him
7 Cirkin: Was solid in defence down the left-hand side and made a number of telling forward breaks into the Wigan half
7 Evans: Threw himself into a series of tackles at the heart of midfield and has clearly shaken off his injury issues
8 O’Nien: Shut down Wigan’s creative players and got forward to score Sunderland’s second goal with a neat first-time finish
6 Dajaku: Displayed some nice touches as he swapped from one flank to the other, but wasted a good opportunity at the end of the first half
8 PRITCHARD: Caused the Wigan defence all sorts of problems as he drifted across the frontline, constantly probing for an opening
6 O’Brien: Formed an effective partnership with Broadhead, most notably when intelligently leaving the ball in the build-up to Sunderland’s opener
8 Broadhead: His movement across the frontline was excellent – and he got his reward with the slick finish that opened his Black Cats scoring account
Subs:
Embleton (for Pritchard, 71)
Stewart (for Dajaku, 71)
Neil (for Huggins, 79)
(not used): Hoffman (gk), Flanagan, Doyle, Taylor.
Man Of The Match: ALEX PRITCHARD – The midfielder has not had many chances to impress since joining from Huddersfield this summer – but he certainly took this one.
