WHILE Middlesbrough had a very fruitful transfer window with 12 signings in total, the club fell short in their pursuit for cover at left-back.

Andraz Sporar and James Lea-Siliki completed loan moves to the club on deadline day but the club were unable to complete any further deals.

Marc Bola remains Boro's only senior left-back at the club following the departure of Hayden Coulson, who has moved to Ipswich on loan until the end of the season.

Swansea City's Jake Bidwell was understood to be close to moving to Teesside but a move failed to materialise before the 11pm deadline.

Former Boro left-back Joe Bennett has been linked with a possible return to the club but the 31-year-old completed a late move to League One side Wigan Athletic yesterday, where he's signed a two-year deal at the DW Stadium.

While Neil Warnock has succeeded in his attempts to bolster the numbers of the squad, the club seem to be short of cover in the left side of defence and Warnock will be concerned at the thought of Bola picking up any injuries between now and the January transfer window.

Bola has suffered with injury problems during pre-season but has recovered from a hernia to be fit in time for the season where he's scored once and featured in all five of Boro's Championship games.

Lee Peltier can be used as a left-back for Boro if needed but options are thin after Coulson's move to Ipswich as well as Jack Robinson moving to Yeovil Town on loan.

Elsewhere, following the arrivial of Lea-Siliki, Sam Morsy left Boro to join Ipswich Town on a three year deal.

Morsy's permanent switch to the League One side reunites him with former manager Paul Cook, who he played under at Wigan Athletic.

The midfielder made 39 appearances in the one season he had at the club, scoring once against Swansea City.

Hayden Hackney, another midfielder in Boro's squad, has moved to League Two side Scunthorpe United on loan until January.

It remains to be seen whether Djed Spence will be a Boro player after Nottingham Forest made a late move for the wing-back last night but there's been no confirmation of a deal being struck.
