LEE BURGE is set to return to the Sunderland squad for Saturday’s home game with Wycombe Wanderers, but Lee Johnson is yet to decide whether to restore Corry Evans to the matchday group.

Burge has been absent since sustaining a leg injury in the warm-up ahead of the win over AFC Wimbledon, but the goalkeeper should be available to face Wycombe.

Evans has been struggling with a hamstring injury, and while the Northern Irishman returned to training this week, Johnson will make a late call over whether or not he is involved at the weekend.

The Sunderland head coach said: “I think Burgey will be fine and (Lynden) Gooch is also training tomorrow. Then you’ve got Corry Evans who has been out on the grass for a couple of days and looks in a better place, which is good.

“If it was an absolute cup final on Saturday then I think he could play, but there’s a couple of trains of thought with that.

"One is that he’s been called into the Northern Ireland squad, so it’s a good chance to build him up and let him build his fitness levels. But then two is to thrust him again and sink or swim.”

Frederik Alves hobbled off in the latter stages of Tuesday’s win at Bloomfield Road, but the West Ham loanee did not suffer any significant damage.

Johnson said: “We had a couple of knocks in the Blackpool game but nothing serious. Alves was just cramp, so he’s okay, and there were a couple of bumps and bruises from the game, but generally just contact ones where you dust yourself off and go again.”
