JORDAN Jones has become the latest player to have played for Sunderland last season and join Wigan Athletic ahead of the new season.

The 26-year-old leaves Scottish side Rangers to move to the DW Stadium on a three-year deal.

The move sets up an interesting opening day of the season with Sunderland hosting Wigan at the Stadium of Light on Saturday with the Latics already sealing deal for Charlie Wyke and Max Power in the summer.

Wyke declined a new contract at Sunderland to link up with the on a reported £10,000 per week while Max Power re-signed for the club after being released.

Jones made 19 appearances for the Black Cats last season scoring three goals.

Upon the completion of his move, Jones said: “I’m over the moon – the move has been in the pipeline for a few weeks so I’m just thankful to be here and I cannot wait to get started and kick on.

“I spoke to the manager and a few of the players, and it seems there is such a positive vibe around the place at the minute - it’s something that I want to be a part of.

“They’ve got a clear vision with how they want to play football; playing attacking football and getting as many results as we can."

There was no suggestion that Jones was interested in a move back to the club after his loan spell.

Meanwhile, Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman says that talks are progressing well with full-back Denver Hume who has been offered a new contract at the Stadium of Light.

The 22-year-old has been in training with the club despite becoming a free agent over the summer.
