IT was a case of happy families at Redcar Races today as television presenter Derek Thompson called in on his way to a holiday in Scotland to see his brother’s horse win at 33-1.

‘Thommo’ wore an even bigger smile than usual after Point of Woods won The Get So Much More With Racing TV Handicap Stakes under Phil Dennis.

The gelding is owned by Howard Thompson and trained near Loftus by his partner, Tina Jackson, who couldn’t believe the starting price.

“He ran well here over five furlongs last time and he’s down to such a low mark that we were expecting him to go close,” she said.

Howard added: “I was shocked that he wasn’t something like 5-1, so we’re delighted. It’s nice for Derek to be here to see him win.”

Thommo said: “It’s fantastic – I had a pound each-way on it!” though the grin suggested it might have been more.

Tim Easterby led the training honours, sealing a double for Malton with Kentucky Kitten and My Thought.

Kentucky Kitten, ridden by David Allan, broke his duck in The Every Race Live On Racing TV Handicap Stakes, holding on in a driving finish from Redcar specialist Mr Coco Bean.

Assistant trainer William Easterby said: “I was watching him canter the other day and wondering why we hadn’t won with him, but things just needed to fall right. He's a nice horse and could well progress now."

The double was sealed when William’s girlfriend, Charlotte Crane, rode through a torrential downpour to win the AJA Novice Flat Amateur Jockeys' Handicap on My Thought.

Charlotte said: "We were expecting him to run well – it was the first time over that trip, and he got it really well. I wasn’t hard on him so, hopefully, there’s more to come.”

Leyburn trainer Karl Burke had the hot favourite, Last Crusader, in the opener, The Best Flat Races Live On Racing TV British EBF Novice Stakes, but his other runner, Milbanke, prevailed at 22-1 under Harrison Shaw.

The winner was home bred by West Moor Stud, near Thirsk, and owner Kate Sigsworth said: “It was a bit of a surprise. Karl was looking forward to seeing her run but thought his other one would be hard to beat.”

The most impressive winner of the day was Star Jewel who sparkled in the Watch Racing TV In Stunning HD Fillies' Novice Stakes, winning by six and a half lengths in the hands of in-form Connor Beasley.

The filly is trained at Newmarket by Simon and Ed Crisford and the stable’s Travelling Head Lad, Jamie Scotland, said: “She’s been working really well at home. It’s a long way to come but we were confident. The world’s her oyster.”

Another Newmarket raider gave five pounds claimer Adam Farragher his first UK winner as the William Haggas-trained Sweet Believer comfortably landed The racingtv.com Straight-Mile Series Handicap Stakes.

Adam, who rode 20 winners in his native Ireland, said: “It’s an honour to be associated with the Haggas stable.”

Odd Socks Havana, trained by David O’Meara and ridden by Shane Gray, sprung the day’s biggest surprise at 40-1 in The Get Much More With Racing TV Handicap Stakes.
