CALLUM Wilson has some big shoes to fill after being given the coveted number nine shirt at Newcastle United

Some of the club's greatest ever players have donned the same squad number including their record goalscorer Alan Shearer.

After Wilson's first season on Tyneside saw him score 12 goals in 28 appearances, Wilson has been given the number nine for their upcoming Premier League season.

"It’s a great honour to wear the number nine shirt. It means so much to the club and to the supporters" Wilson told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"I feel like it’s an honour to put it on and to be able to wear it and to make sure that when I do wear it, I’m doing it justice.

"Ultimately, just trying to work hard for the team, make sure I can help out. Get some goals and get some assists. It was nice to get off to goal in front of the fans for the first time."

Both Newcastle and Wilson are looking to formulate a beneficial enterprise for the coming season as the 29-year-old looks to live up to the bill of being the club's number nine.

The Englishman found the back of the net in the Magpies most recent friendly tie against Doncaster Rovers last Friday, which is the first time he's found the net in front of Newcastle United fans.

"Me and Ryan (Fraser), we’ve had a relationship for the last few years now and it’s quite instinctive.

"He’s got the ball, I knew where to be and he’s feed it through and it was an instinctive finish as well.

"It was nice in front of the fans, a nice first goal.

"Grateful to those guys for travelling down here on the evening and celebrate with us.

"It was really nice. It’s why you come to clubs like this and play football.

"It’s such a massive club so it’s a pleasure to play in front them all singing their hearts out and you’ve got chants about your name.

"It’s a nice feeling and it gives you that extra bit of confidence, that ten per cent and it makes you feel ten feet tall."
