FORMER Sunderland midfielder Martin Smith has become Hartlepool United's second permanent signing of the summer.

THe 25-year-old joins from National League side Chesterfield having signed for the Spirites back in January this year but Pools have managed to broker a deal for his services.

The midfielder started his career with Sunderland. During his time with the Black Cats, he spent time on loan with Gateshead and Carlisle United before making a permanent move north of the border to Kilmarnock.

Smith has since gone on to have spells with Coleraine, Swindon Town, Salford City and Chorley.

He becomes the second player to come through the door at Hartlepool United following the arrival of Accrington Stanley defender Reagan Ogle.

Dave Challinor told the club website: "Really pleased to get Martin in. He is someone we have spoken about for a number of years when assessing our midfield options.

"For someone who is still quite young, he has got plenty of experience, a local lad, knows the area well and you can tell he has really got that bit in between his teeth. He is willing to back himself and prove his place in the side.

"Quality on the ball is very good, he fits the profile we are looking for and sure he will be a good asset."
