George Dobson has left Sunderland by mutual consent ahead of the 2021/22 League One season to join Charlton Athletic.

The 23-year-old made 46 appearances in the red and white of Sunderland during two years on Wearside after making a permanent move from Walsall in July 2019 but the second half of last season was on loan at fellow League One side AFC Wimbledon, where he featured 24 times, scoring once.

Dobson was a trainee with Arsenal before making permanent moves to Premier League West Ham and Dutch Eredivisie side Sparta Rotterdam.

He was a regular feature in the side in his first season at the club making 36 appearances in all competitions but found game time hard to come by this season, subsequently making the loan move to AFC Wimbledon.

Dobson has signed a two-year deal with the Addicks.

He told the official club website: "I’m delighted - the size of the club, the manager, the fans – it has everything really.

"When I found out about the interest it was something that really intrigued and interested me.

"Then, obviously, once you have the conversation and find out the manager’s aspirations for you, it was a no brainer. I’m delighted to be here and really can’t wait to get started."

As Lee Johnson looks to revamp his squad ahead of the new season, Dobson and Sunderland have parted ways with pre season getting underway this week.

Johnson was boosted by the news that winger Aiden McGeady put pen to paper on a fresh new one-year deal this week.

The Black Cats are still awaiting news on Denver Hume, Luke O'Nien and Charlie who have all been offered a new contract to stay at the Stadium of Light.

Their first pre season friendly is this weekend as they play National League North side Spennymoor Town in a 3pm kick off.
