ENTRIES are now open as the popular Darlington 10k road race prepares to return to the town.

More than two thousand runners will set off to complete two laps of the town centre course in what has become a popular event for runners of all levels aged 15 and over.

Sponsored for the second time by local car dealer SG Petch, the race is set to take place on Sunday 1 August at 10am.

Younger runners aged eight to 14 are catered for in a Junior 3km run which takes place at 9.45am while the Family Fun Run provides an opportunity for all at 9am.

The 10k was cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic but Darlington Borough Council says appropriate Covid safety measures are in place for this year's event.

Organisers moved the event online via social media where would-be runners were encouraged to sign up to the Darlo Solo 10k 2020.

The authority works with the Rotary Club of Darlington to organise the event which supports the club’s two nominated charities Bright Red and County Durham Community Foundation.

Kevin Nicholson, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for health and housing, said: “The 10k has been a regular event for more than 25 years and is a firm favourite on the running calendar for many local and regional runners.

"The events team has worked hard to ensure that this year’s race can go ahead, all being well, and they have put measures in place to make it as safe as possible for the runners."
