Fans of local Speedway side Redcar Bears have been raising funds to fix the bike of their injured rider Jordan Stewart.

A JustGiving page was set up for Stewart after he was part of a horrific crash during a meeting with the Birmingham Bears last week.

The initial target of £500 had been raised to help with the cost of Stewart's recovery and to make repairs on his bike. Fans have doubled the target with their donations and so far over £1,330 has been raised.

Stewart had surgery on his collarbone last Friday and is currently recovering at home.

The meeting was abandoned after nine heats with the Bears coming out on top winning 31-22 last week. They would go on to win the second meeting 46-44 to progress to the next round of the Knockout Cup.

Promoter Jitendra Duffil said: "It's awful luck for him after the sacrifices he made to come over this year.

"It's a long road to recovery ahead, but hopefully we see him back on a bike this year at some point."

The Redcar Bears are next in action on Friday in the Speedway Championship away to the Glasgow Tigers.
