Tommy Miller has been speaking about his first managerial job as he takes the reigns at Spennymoor Town.

The former Sunderland and Hartlepool United midfielder was appointed as first team manager in April after a spell as interim manager, following the departure of Jason Ainsley in December last year.

The 42-year-old has also had a spell as joint caretaker manager of Swindon Town back in 2013 after Paolo Di Canio quit the role.

Miller will be overseeing the team with a new look coaching department as Moors look to mount a push for National League North promotion. He steps up from his role as assistant manager at the Brewery Field.

“I see myself as a head coach. I enjoy doing the coaching” Miller told BBC Radio Tees Sport Extra.

“I think the modern day manager does enjoy coaching. Tuchel at Chelsea likes to get hands on, Guardiola at City likes to coach.

“They’re a million miles away from myself but they’re just two examples.

“That’s how I see myself I enjoy being out with the lads and I enjoy getting my ideas across.

“I’ve got fantastic people around me like Stuart Parnaby. He’s very good with the individual stuff and speaks to the lads one-to-one, he obviously has the knowledge.

“Then we’ve got Jason Kennedy who’s had a fantastic football career as well. He’s going to be player/coach so obviously he’s going to have a few ideas along the way.

“I’ve got a good team around but I am pretty hands on so I don’t see that changing much.

“Apart from maybe a matchday where I might not be out on the field with the lads, setting them up for shots or doing possession with them.”

“I’ll be inside looking at the tactics or looking at the opposition and just working a little bit more on that.

Miller was in interim charge for a short time last season, with one win and two draws to his name.

Moors last competitive game was a 3-1 over Gateshead on 28th December 2020.

“We haven’t had much time at it obviously with the season getting finished.

“I had three league games, then the season got cut short and we cancelled training.

“We’ve been in the last two Saturdays just for some fitness testing so when we do go back properly at the end of June, there will be a little bit of a change to me.

“I’ve just got to oversee things a little bit from a player point of view but I’ll still be hands on with the coaching.

“I want to be approachable. I don’t want the lads to think ‘he’s the manager now, I can’t go and speak to him’.

“But I’ve also got Stuey (Parnaby). If they don’t want to speak directly to me, they can go through him. He’ll be the links between me and the players if needs be.”
