IT was a case of golden consolation for Silvestre de Sousa at sun-kissed Redcar Races today (Monday).

A fortnight ago, the former champion jockey was demoted to second place by the Newmarket stewards after being first past the post on the Andrew Balding-trained Good Birthday.

Today the five-year-old gelding made up for that disappointment by landing Redcar’s feature race, the Racing TV Zetland Gold Cup, by half a length from Roger Charlton’s Makram.

Good Birthday was the second leg of a double for de Sousa, who had taken the first race, the Join Racing TV Now Selling Stakes, on Newmarket raider Greek Kodiac, trained by Michael Bell. The winner was bought-in for £10,500.

There was a shock in the day’s second race, The Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Median Auction Maiden Stakes, when the Ann Duffield-trained Runninwild won at odds of 200-1, with David Allan in the saddle.

The Wensleydale trainer said after the race: "We've always loved him. It wasn't a surprise that he won – it was just a surprise that he was 200-1!

“He fell out of the gate on his first start, and it was too soft on his second run, so this was the first time he’s been able to get into a race. He’s still big and weak so, hopefully, there’s more to come.”

Ann bought the horse as a yearling from Bearstone Stud and sold him as a two-year-old to Ian Farrington, an engineering manager from Silsden, in West Yorkshire.

Mr Farrington, who received the trophy with his wife Nancy, said: “We bought him on the recommendation of George Duffield, and it’s paid off, so we’re thrilled.”

Hambleton trainer Bryan Smart gave a very positive assessment of Sir Titus after the good-looking son of Dandy Man won The Watch On Racing TV Handicap Stakes.

“We like this horse a lot – he could be a Saturday horse in the making," said Smart after the chestnut colt held on by a short-head from Michael Dods’ fast finishing Navajo Spring under a strong Graham Lee ride.

“We gave him a break after he won his maiden at Newcastle and waited for this race,” added Smart. “A furlong out, he hit a speed bump and lost his action but still managed to get it together. It’s great for his owners, who’ve been really patient. We’ll see what the handicapper does but there’s more to come from him.”

The horse is owned by brothers Terry and Michael Moses, who are long-standing supporters of the stable, and own the Calder Sheetmetal engineering company, based at Elland, near Halifax. Terry said: “We’ve had to give him a bit of time because he’s such a big horse, so we’re hoping he’ll progress. Patience is a virtue!”

Another former champion jockey, Jim Crowley, landed The racingtv.com EBF Restricted Novice Stakes, with the well-backed Silks Pass, on his first ride for Darryll Holland.

The jockey told Racing TV: "Darryll told me I'd be on a winner and he was right. He knew his job as a breeze-up horse but took a while to get into top gear.”

Asked about his ride in Saturday’s Epsom Derby on the William Haggas-trained Mohaafeth, Crowley added: “We’ll just pray for a dry week because he wouldn’t want it soft. If it comes up quick, he’ll have a great chance.”

King of Speed, trained at Newmarket by Robert Cowell and ridden by three-pound claimer Ray Dawson, lived up to his name to win The racingtv.com EBF Restricted Novice Stakes by outgunning favourite Barging Thru.

Barging Thru had beaten King of Speed on their debuts at Chelsmford but the latter was 10lbs better off at the weights.

Roger Fell's Cockalorum showed a great attitude to win The Market Cross Jewellers Handicap Stakes under an enterprising Jason Hart ride. The gelding was defying a penalty after a career-best performance to win at Musselburgh six days ago.

Course and distance winner Sands Chorus showed his liking for Redcar by taking the final race, the Come Racing Again Tomorrow Handicap, for Osmotherley trainer Karen Tutty and jockey Tom Eaves.

Tutty said: “We’re delighted with him – it’s just a shame he had to drop so low in the handicap before finding his winning ways. It’s just nice to get a couple on the scoresheet. He obviously likes Redcar, so we’ll see what his revised rating is and go from there.”
