SPENNYMOOR TOWN have appointed former Sunderland and Hartlepool United midfielder Tommy Miller as their new permanent manager.

Miller was promoted to the role of manager on an interim basis in December after long-term servant Jason Ainsley stepped down.

The 42-year-old had been Ainsley’s assistant as Moors won promotion from the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League, and oversaw a three-game unbeaten run towards the latter stages of the 2020-21 National League North campaign, which was curtailed because of Covid.

“I’m delighted to be appointed Spennymoor Town manager on a full-time basis,” said Miller, who made more than 600 appearances, scoring more than 100 goals, during his professional career. “Having been at the club for just under five years now, I know how professionally run everything is and the plans in place to take Spennymoor Town forward.

“There is a lot to sort and organise in preparation for the new season, but I can’t wait to get started as it’s something I have always wanted to do since finishing my playing career. I’m confident that with the players I bring into the football club, alongside the group we already have, we can be right up there when it matters next season.”

This is Miller’s first full-time managerial position, but his involvement at the Brewery Field since 2016 should ensure a seamless transition.

“It was a no-brainer giving Tommy the role on a permanent basis,” said managing director Tony Wilson. “Tommy’s professionalism and drive towards planning and building upon the great work he and Jason have done has been clear for all to see.

“It’s no secret that there was a lot of interest in the position and we were inundated with candidates, but we felt that Tommy had earned his opportunity to take the role. It was evident to us that Tommy’s ambitions matched the club’s, and his plans for the season ahead are clear.

“We know the National League North is a tough division to get out of, but we will be doing our utmost to compete with the sides at the top of the league and finish as high as we can. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that I am hoping for a complete season, with fans."
