How did the players fare in Newcastle's 2-1 win at Burnley?
BURNLEY (4-4-2):
Peacock-Farrell 6; Lowton 6, Tarkowski 6, Mee 6, Pieters 5; Gudmundsson 5 (Mumbongo 90), Westwood 5, Brownhill 6, McNeil 5; VYDRA 6, Wood 5.
Subs (not used): Norris (gk), Bardsley, Dunne, Taylor, Cork, Stephens, Nartey, Richardson.
NEWCASTLE (5-3-2):
9 Dubravka: Made crucial saves either side of half-time and was superb in the closing stages as he dealt with a succession of balls into the box
7 Murphy: Improved markedly after a sluggish start and hauled Newcastle level with a fantastic strike into the far corner
6 Fernandez: Stood up to a barrage of balls into the box in the final quarter of the game after struggling before the break
5 Clark: Was badly at fault for the Burnley goal as he stood off Wood following a poor defensive header, but didn’t allow his head to drop
7 Dummett: Justified his presence as a centre-half once again and won some vital late headers as Burnley piled on the pressure
6 Ritchie: His second-half performance was much better than his first – prevented Burnley’s players from getting behind him after the break
6 Almiron: Ran himself into the ground in a midfield position and almost scored with a late shot that was cleared off the line
6 Shelvey: Lost his man on a couple of occasions, but produced some important passes to get Newcastle going in the second half
7 S Longstaff: His return to the side has delivered some welcome midfield energy – should have been awarded a penalty when he was kicked in the head
5 Gayle: Came close with a first-half shot that Peacock-Farrell saved, but it says much that Newcastle improved dramatically once he was replaced
4 Joelinton: Hadn’t really looked like posing a threat before he was hauled off for Saint-Maximin at the start of the second half
Subs:
6 Wilson (for Gayle, 57): Returned to the side for the first time since mid-February, and while he looked rusty, his presence is a massive boost
9 SAINT-MAXIMIN (for Joelinton, 57): Transformed the game as he scored and claimed an assist within seven minutes of leaving the bench
Hendrick (for Almiron, 90)
(not used): Darlow (gk), Manquillo, Krafth, Lewis, Willock, Carroll.
Man Of The Match: ALLAN SAINT-MAXIMIN – It is hard to remember the last time a Newcastle substitute had as big an impact as this. Changed the course of the game – and the Magpies’ season – within a matter of minutes.
