CALLUM WILSON will return to the Newcastle United squad for Sunday’s trip to Burnley – but Jamaal Lascelles has suffered a suspected stress fracture to his foot that could end his season.

Wilson has come through a full week of training unscathed, and will join Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron in the squad that will travel to Turf Moor.

It remains to be seen whether he is deemed fit enough to start, with his last appearance having come in the 3-2 win over Southampton at the start of February.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce said: “Callum and Allan will be in the squad. We’ve obviously still got two more days of training to go, but Callum and Allan have trained all week, so it’s good news for us that they’re available.

“Will they start? That’s the big decision I’ve got make. I’m mindful of the fact that both of them have had muscle injuries – groin and a hamstring – which you’ve always got to box carefully with. But I’m also aware that we’ve only got six weeks of the season left. I hope I make the right choice.”

While Wilson’s injury situation has improved significantly over the last couple of weeks, Lascelles damaged his foot in last weekend’s draw with Spurs.

It was initially hoped that the problem was a minor one, but that has not proved to be the case and as well as missing Sunday’s game, the Magpies skipper is at risk of having to sit out the remainder of the campaign.

Bruce said: “We’ve lost the captain with a foot injury, which unfortunately happened last week against Spurs. That’s a blow to us. With Fab Schar being missing too, it leaves us a bit light there.

“It’s not looking so good for him at the moment. He’s going to have more scans and all the rest of it over the weekend, but it’s not looking good. He won’t play this weekend, that’s for sure. We think it’s maybe a stress fracture.”

Lascelles’ absence creates a gap at the heart of Newcastle’s defence, but having been unavailable last weekend, Federico Fernandez are both back in the frame to face Burnley.

Their availability means Bruce can stick with the five-man defensive shape he fielded against Spurs if he wants to, with Jacob Murphy and Matt Ritchie having performed so effectively in the wing-back positions last weekend.

Further up the field, the Newcastle boss will once again be without the injured Ryan Fraser, although Andy Carroll has a chance of returning to the squad.

Bruce said: “Carroll’s got a chance. Ryan Fraser? That hasn’t improved at all. It’s a groin injury that he’s got, and it’s a bit of a worry.

“Andy will have a big training session today. He’s missed the last two-and-a-half weeks, but we’ll see how he is.”
