How did the players perform in Sunderland's 2-1 defeat at Shrewsbury Town?

SHREWSBURY (4-3-3):

Sarkic 7; Love 6, Ebanks-Landell 8, Williams 6, Ogbeta 7; Vela 6, Goss 6 (Edwards 86), Norburn 6; Whalley 7, Main 6 (Udoh 88), CHAPMAN 8 (Daniels 76).

Subs (not used): Burgoyne (gk), Golbourne, Pyke, Davis.

SUNDERLAND (4-4-2):

3 Matthews: Allowed Shrewsbury to equalise as he failed to claim a cross – doesn’t look to be the answer ahead of Burge

5 Power: Struggled to cope with Shrewsbury’s attacking play and wasn’t able to get forward himself

5 Willis: Only lasted a couple of minutes before an awkward fall resulted in him having to leave the field on a stretcher

6 Wright: Defended well for most of the game and came close with a late diving header that flew just wide

4 Vokins: His inexperience was evident on a number of occasions as he struggled to deal with Chapman

4 Jones: Saw a first-half shot blocked close to the goalline, but was a bystander for long periods and was replaced before the hour mark

5 Leadbitter: Tried to keep things ticking over at the heart of midfield but found himself passed around in the second half

6 SCOWEN: Made some important interceptions in and around his own box, and tried to get on the front foot when possible

4 McGeady: Forced Sarkic into a save with a late free-kick, but needs to be doing much more to trouble opposition defences

6 O’Brien: Opened the scoring with a composed low finish and was a lively attacking presence all night

5 Wyke: Couldn’t keep his fine recent scoring record going as he looped a second-half header harmlessly over the bar

Subs:

6 Sanderson (for Willis, 7): Defended reasonably well for the most part, winning plenty of headers in his 18-yard box

5 Gooch (for Jones, 58): Wasn’t really able to exert any influence in the final half-hour

Diamond (for Vokins, 75)

O’Nien (for Power, 75)

(not used): Burge (gk), McLaughlin, Maguire.

Man Of The Match: HARRY CHAPMAN – Shrewsbury’s Hartlepool-born match winner caused problems for the Sunderland defence all night.
